LANZAROTE
The island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands belongs to the province of Las Palmas. With a population of about 142,000 inhabitants is the third most populated Canary Island after Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It is named after the navigator Laceloto Malocello, who came to the island in the XIV century.
In the centre and south of the island is the Timanfaya Natural Park, where about 25 volcanoes and lava fields in some areas can still be seen and you still can notice volcanic activity due to heat emanating from the earth. Near the town of El Golfo is green Charco, a lake of seawater that has this color because of the large amount of phytoplankton it contains. It is also curious landscape of rock ledges that have forged farmers to protect grape vines from strong winds and thereby obtain wine from Lanzarote.
From the white sand beach of Papagayo you can make out Fuerteventura, due to the strong winds that blow in Lanzarote it also is common to see people windsurfing.
